Yadriccha-labha-santushtho dvandvatito vimatsarah, samah siddhav asiddhau ca kritvapi na nibadhyate

Content with whatever comes of its own accord, free from duality, without envy, equal in success and failure — even while acting, such a person is not bound.

  • Equanimity toward all outcomes is the hallmark of the liberated
  • Contentment with what arrives naturally is the highest abundance
  • Freedom from the pairs of opposites dissolves karmic bondage
Jitatmanah prasantasya paramatma samahitah, shitoshna-sukha-duhkheshu tatha manapamanayoh

One who has conquered the mind has already reached the Supreme Self, for they have attained tranquility. To such a person, happiness and distress, heat and cold, honor and dishonor are all the same.

  • Mental conquest leads to supreme peace
  • Equanimity in all conditions
  • Transcending dualities
Iccha-dveshha-samutthena dvandva-mohena bharata, sarva-bhutani sammoham sarge yanti parantapa

O scion of Bharata, O conqueror of enemies, all beings fall into delusion at birth due to the illusion of duality arising from desire and aversion. From the very moment of birth, beings are conditioned by the pairs of opposites — attraction and repulsion — which create the fundamental delusion of separateness.

  • Desire and aversion are the root causes of spiritual delusion
  • Duality consciousness creates the illusion of separateness from God
  • Liberation begins with transcending the pairs of opposites
Tapamy aham aham varsham nigrihnamy utsrijami ca, amritam caiva mrityush ca sad asac caham arjuna

I give heat, I withhold and send forth rain. I am immortality and I am also death; I am being and non-being, O Arjuna. The Lord is the totality of all opposites — the principle that underlies all dualities and encompasses the full range of cosmic phenomena.

  • God encompasses all opposites — life and death, being and non-being
  • Natural phenomena like rain and heat are direct expressions of divine will
  • Transcending duality means recognising the Lord in all contrasts
