Evam buddheh param buddhva samstabhyatmanam atmana, jahi shatrum maha-baho kama-rupam durasadam

Thus knowing the soul to be superior to the material intellect, O mighty-armed Arjuna, subdue the self by the self and conquer lust, the formidable enemy.

Divine presence ensures success

Yatra yogeshvarah krishno yatra partho dhanur-dharah, tatra shrir vijayo bhutir dhruva nitir matir mama

Wherever there is Krishna, the master of all mystics, and wherever there is Arjuna, the supreme archer, there will also certainly be opulence, victory, extraordinary power, and morality.

We are instruments of divine will

Tasmāt tvam uttiṣhṭha yaśho labhasva jitvā śhatrūn bhuṅkṣhva rājyaṁ samṛiddham, mayaivaite nihatāḥ pūrvam eva nimitta-mātraṁ bhava savya-sāchin

Therefore, arise and attain glory. Conquer your enemies and enjoy a prosperous kingdom. They are already slain by My arrangement; you are merely an instrument.

Righteous action leads to good outcomes regardless of result

Hato va prapsyasi svargam jitva va bhokshyase mahim tasmad uttishtha kaunteya yuddhaya krita-nishchayah

Either you will be killed on the battlefield and attain the heavenly planets, or you will conquer and enjoy the earthly kingdom. Therefore, get up with determination and fight. Krishna presents Arjuna with a win-win scenario — both outcomes of righteous battle lead to benefit. There is no reason for hesitation.

  • Victory and death in battle both yield spiritual gain for the warrior

Treat opposites with equanimity

Sukha-duhkhe same kritva labhalabhau jayajayau, tato yuddhaya yujyasva naivam papam avapsyasi

Fight for the sake of duty, treating alike happiness and distress, loss and gain, victory and defeat. Fulfilling your responsibility in this way, you will never incur sin.

  • Balanced action prevents karma

Equanimity in pleasure and pain

Duhkhesv anudvigna-manah sukhesu vigata-sprhah, vita-raga-bhaya-krodhah sthita-dhir munir ucyate

One who is not disturbed in spite of miseries, who doesn't crave happiness, and who is free from attachment, fear, and anger, is called a sage of steady mind.

  • Mental stability through detachment

Mental conquest leads to supreme peace

Jitatmanah prasantasya paramatma samahitah, shitoshna-sukha-duhkheshu tatha manapamanayoh

One who has conquered the mind has already reached the Supreme Self, for they have attained tranquility. To such a person, happiness and distress, heat and cold, honor and dishonor are all the same.

Self-realization is the greatest gain — nothing beyond it is greater

Yam labdhva caparam labham manyate nadhikam tatah, yasmin sthito na duhkhena gurunapi vicalyate

Having attained which, no other gain is considered greater; established in which, one is not shaken even by the heaviest sorrow. This is the supreme attainment — a state so complete that no further seeking is needed and no sorrow can dislodge the yogi from it.

  • Established in this state, no sorrow can disturb the yogi
  • The finality of this attainment ends all spiritual seeking

All psychological and moral qualities originate from the Supreme

Buddhir jnanam asammohah ksama satyam damah shamah, sukham duhkham bhavo 'bhavo bhayam cabhayam eva ca

Intelligence, knowledge, freedom from doubt and delusion, forgiveness, truthfulness, self-control and calmness, happiness and distress, birth, death, fear, and fearlessness — all these diverse qualities of living beings arise from Me alone.

  • Both positive and negative experiences are expressions of divine energy
  • Tracing all qualities back to their divine source leads to wisdom

The Lord's energy pervades all human endeavours, even ambiguous ones

Dyutam chalayatam asmi tejas tejasvinam aham, jayo 'smi vyavasayo 'smi sattvam sattvavatam aham

I am the gambling of the deceitful; I am the splendour of the splendid; I am victory; I am enterprise; and I am the strength of the strong. Even in competitive and deceptive endeavours the Lord is present as the element of excellence — divine energy pervades even ambiguous human activities.

  • Victory and enterprise are divine in essence when rooted in strength and purpose
  • Sattvic strength — clarity, virtue, and power — is a primary divine manifestation

The fourfold path: work for God, supreme devotion, non-attachment, non-enmity

Mat-karma-kṛin mat-paramo mad-bhaktaḥ saṅga-varjitaḥ, nirvairaḥ sarva-bhūteṣhu yaḥ sa mām eti pāṇḍava

O Pandava, one who performs My work, considers Me as the supreme, is devoted to Me, is free from attachment, and is without enmity toward any being — such a person comes to Me.

  • Action and devotion must be combined for liberation
